The Ins and Out of Influencer Marketing: A #CMWorld Twitter Chat with Amanda Maksymiw

amandaclose_webYou need to market your marketing. This is an often-quoted theme from Jay Baer (indeed, he spoke about it at Content Marketing World 2013).  While there are many ways to do this, one of the best ways is through influencer marketing.  But, take note: this is hard work, and there are no shortcuts  (although having a plan can help you be more efficient).

A big thanks to Amanda Maksymiw (@amandamaks) who joined our (very active) #CMWorld Twitter chat that covered all aspects of influencer marketing. It’s our longest transcript yet!

To learn more about this topic, join us for our Content Marketing World workshop, Creating and Executing a Social Influencer Program. Also watch for more from the Content Marketing Institute.

@Jupiter_Labs

@CMIContent @MichaelMooneyy @amandamaks Is this something available to anyone, or just those who made the class? #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

MT Q1: Influencer marketing is getting peeps to share your story who can sway your audience #cmworld

@tamarweiss

Influencer marketing is about working w/those who have sway over your audience. It helps boost awareness, reach, credibility #CMWorld

@CreativeChaosCD

A1 – You can only do so much on your own, marketing to influencers helps your message/brand spread faster. #cmworld

@z_Paper

@lttlewys Something you’re an expert at – building that community and identifying influencers! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A1: B2B Influencer marketing is also about buying committee influence – one persona to another #cmworld

@ardath421

@palkoviz @mikemyers614 refreshing worked for me 🙂 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@z_Paper and to a specific audience #cmworld

@StudioOne

A1: With limited resources and a niche market, there is no better way to inspire growth than getting to the industry’s voice. #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

@atxcopywriter @CMIContent A1: I love how it can grow your credibility and position yourself as a thought leader #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A1 – IM is important to content marketing because you have to give influential people things they WANT to share & spread. #CMWorld

@FiveMinPro

A1: It’s about getting someone passionate about your message so they share it with their network (= your audience). #CMWorld

@webber_karen

Q2: What is the first step you take in developing an influencer marketing program? #CMWorld

A1 To me, IM & CM go hand in hand. Like peanut butter and chocolate, they are better together #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@CMIContent *blush* thank you, I am just lucky I know some smart people 😉 #CMWorld

@lttlewys

A1: Influencers come in a lot of shapes & sizes too. Could be customers, industry experts, consultants, bloggers, etc #cmworld

@amandamaks

@StudioOne exactly, don’t try to be the only influence on that audience, influence the influencers. #cmworld

@z_Paper

A2. Identity the right influences and who their audience is #cmworld

@StudioOne

@amandamaks I just pictured the Butterfinger Cups Super Bowl commercial! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A2: Decide what you want to accomplish, what are your goals, then identify influencers (they aren’t always who you think) #CMWorld

@lttlewys

@palkoviz @CMIContent Yep, getting the nod from people are already thought leaders works like a shortcut to becoming one yourself #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

@SFerika @lttlewys @CMIContent @Steph_Montreuil @ardath421 *WAVE* #SSCH #cmworld (I’ll get on that list eventually)

@FiveMinPro

A2: Identify and then build relationships before you ask influencers for anything #cmworld

@ardath421

A moment of #cmworld twitter chat w @amandamaks in #Slovenia http://t.co/fhpYQakDAE

@NenadSenic

Have to agree with @amandamaks. “A1 To me, IM & CM go hand in hand. Like peanut butter and chocolate, they are better together

@moveo

@CMIContent A2: Looking into who your influencers are and how to approach them – is it possible, or you need a plan? #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A1 influencer marketing can give your content marketing a “seal of approval” #cmworld

@angusmacaulay

A2: listen – the influencers in your industry are already talking and sharing, find them and interact with them #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A2: Define objective and set goals! Are you striving for greater awareness, more conversions, etc? That will shape your program. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A2. Get involved in your community via social networking by joining in conversations and making connections #cmworld

@michelelinn

Think outside the box about the word “influencer.” A1 #cmworld

@moveo

@FiveMinPro Which should usually double as something your audience would want to share and spread, so win/win #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

A2: there are also agencies that work with influencers though I have seen a LOT of bad pitches. I do my own research #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

Joining @CMIContent’s #contentmarketing chat #CMWorld… today’s topic is influencer marketing. Looks like a good discussion already!

@bex__

A2 – You mean AFTER you actually identify who the influencers are in that particular market? 🙂 #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@CMIContent Define goals and identify influencers using set criteria #cmworld

@devonna_j

Exactly! MT @lttlewys: A2: Decide what you want to accomplish, goals, then identify influencers (they aren’t always who you think) #cmworld

@ardath421

@SFerika morning 🙂 @lttlewys @CMIContent @ardath421 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@CMIContent A2: Identify the top influencers in your market, and related markets #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

A2: Once you have goals, you can start to research and build a list of your best influencers by talking to customers, community #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@lttlewys I think identifying your goal is the answer to at least one #cmworld question each week. SO important yet surprisingly overlooked

@michelelinn

A2 ID your objectives and audience, and use this info to ID influencers. Build real relationships! #CMWorld

@webber_karen

@FiveMinPro lol – it’s because you didn’t use the secret coffee handshake 😉 @SFerika @lttlewys @CMIContent @ardath421 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

#CMWorld Hey, what am I missing?

@businessgp

Good point MT @Steph_Montreuil A2: listen – the influencers in your industry are already talking and sharing, (..) interact with them #CMWorld

@palkoviz

@FiveMinPro Which comes first? We’re getting some great responses. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A2: my first step would be to create something for influencers to influence on @CMIContent #CMWorld

@Brewbom

A2: Getting started is all about learning about your audience…so much easier now on the Social Web #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

@amandamaks IM is such a huge part of promoting content, which IMO is the hardest part of good content marketing #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

A2) Listen – only if you understand the needs of the Influencers and your Target Market, you can make an impact on both! #CMworld

@Jupiter_Labs

A2 – Step one figure out what kind of messages your targeted influencers are attracted to. (just like any target audience) #cmworld

@z_Paper

@KyleAkerman mmmm chocolate and peanut butter. Can you tell I am hungry? #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@michelelinn ROFL!! I agree, most people are missing that, or they haven’t fully formed out the goals #CMWorld

@lttlewys

<3 MT @Steph_Montreuil: @FiveMinPro it’s because you didn’t use the secret coffee handshake 😉 @lttlewys @CMIContent @ardath421 #CMWorld

@SFerika

@businessgp Hi Marc! We’re talking Influencer Marketing with @amandamaks. Great to see you! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@FiveMinPro I always say goals first, then research #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A2: First step, who do you want to reach, how do you want to impact them, who influences them and represents your brand #cmworld

@angusmacaulay

@businessgp I have no clue =( I’m at work =( #CMWorld

@ostoppbar

@CMIContent @amandamaks awesome. What’s the question? #CMWorld

@businessgp

A2: @CMIContent I’d talk with folks like @IvyWorldwide about creating a plan around influencer marketing as step one. #CMWorld

@jakeludington

@atxcopywriter @CMIContent But I guess you may need to get someone first on board, before approaching bigger names #CMWorld

@palkoviz

@NenadSenic @CMIContent Build your network of influencers BEFORE you need them. That way you have a relationship already #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A2: Figure out what sub divisions of your industry you want to hit, find influencers, create a narrative around their pain points. #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

A2: Identify the goal. Are you adding another voice on this topic (and need to stand out), blazing a trail, changing the tone…? #CMWorld

@bex__

Q3: Is there a technology/toolkit/template that you use for influencer marketing? #CMWorld

@ostoppbar ahhh or is that boooooooo #CMWorld

@businessgp

Love this: “Influencer Marketing is like the booster shot for any #Marketing campaign.” #CMWorld

@Casielee

@michelelinn @lttlewys I think some folks just get too excited about all the shiny possible tactics and jump in before planning #cmworld

@SFerika

@CMIContent @amandamaks Didn’t see the commercial, but suddenly I want butterfinger #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

I think social listing is a part of IDing influencers. You need to know that they are relevant & post applicable content #CMWORLD

@devonna_j

@atxcopywriter yes! We can’t forget about marketing our marketing like @jaybaer preaches. Influencers can help us do that #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@amandamaks See I’d say identifying your target audience comes before researching how to reach them but those are definitely 1 & 2 #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@SFerika @michelelinn @lttlewys SOS…shiny object syndrome #CMworld

@amandamaks

@SFerika @Steph_Montreuil @lttlewys @CMIContent @ardath421 I’m pretty sure I gave the #SSCH (super secret coffee handshake) 🙂 hehe #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

To shape influencer marketing, define objective & set goals! Are you striving for greater awareness, more conversions?

@CreativeChaosCD

the secret about influencers is that often they themselves may not think they are influential. #cmworld

@Brewbom

@SFerika @lttlewys Imagine how much more productive marketers could be without shiny new object syndrome-but always learning is fun #cmworld

@michelelinn

@businessgrp We’re here: Q3: Is there a technology/toolkit/template that you use for influencer marketing? #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@Steph_Montreuil Agreed. ‘Traditional’ PR skills very relevant in the content space @NenadSenic @CMIContent #CMWorld

@CMRLee

@SFerika @FiveMinPro Hey! #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

@Casielee Hi Casie! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

Fav element: MT @amandamaks: IM provides the oppty for great co-creation & ensures your content is consumed by who you care about #CMWorld

@Casielee

@amandamaks talking to clients is great too, if you’re agency side. Often they have lists of people they’d love to talk about them #CMWorld

@stekenwright

A3: there are more and more tools popping up. @getLittleBird is one example #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Tuning in a bit late to #CMworld. Looks like the topic today is Influencer Marketing? ^craig

@Topicurious

#CMWorld Should never forget that influencers are both ON & OFF line. Don’t overlook that.

@businessgp

A3. @CMIContent SocialBro is a really great tool #cmworld

@devonna_j

@michelelinn @lttlewys Who’s got time to set goals? 🙂 #CMWorld

@KyleAkerman

A3: But good ol’ fashioned research using social and talking to your customers can work very well for smaller orgs #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@michelelinn @SFerika Not sure it’s all about the shiny, people are looking for a Golden Ticket to make things easy. It’s not ever #CMWorld

@lttlewys

It is too easy to rely on clout or similar to “find” influencers. Listen, be engaged and you will find them #CMWorld

@Brewbom

@CMRLee agreed with caveat that pitches need to get better between trad agencies & bloggers #CMWorld @NenadSenic @CMIContent

@Steph_Montreuil

@Brewbom Definitely! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A3 – our approach in the tools department is the same as for regular marketing. They should be using the same tools right? #cmworld

@z_Paper

@FiveMinPro @amandamaks hm, I also think research comes first, as this will help you to come up with more meaningful goals #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

Don’t use templates when reaching out to influencers, they’re hounded every day and appreciate the personal touch #CMWorld

@stekenwright

A3: Create lists on Twitter to highlight your influencers and make it public so they are aware #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Shoot, joining the content chat late…trying to catch up! #CMWorld

@SueBrady

I would argue influencer marketing also positions your org as an industry authority via someone else’s existing authority #Bonus #CMWorld

@Casielee

#CMWorld A3 I want to always engage with them so that they always want to engage with me. Simple really. It’s a partnership.

@businessgp

@CMIContent @Steph_Montreuil Well, ideally they should like your content before you ask them for something #CMWorld

@palkoviz

@Brewbom Good point. These may be the best ones as they may not contacted as much as more popular, well-known people #cmworld

@michelelinn

@CMRLee @NenadSenic @CMIContent I should clarify: SOME pitches – I have seen horrid stuff! #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@stekenwright Always personalize! Don’t make it seem like a mass email. #cmworld

@StudioOne

A3: I like Twtrland and followerwonk, but it takes some digging to find the right folks. #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

@lttlewys @michelelinn nod, that too. The silver bullet of conversions and the shiny new tactic of the day are neighbors. #cmworld

@SFerika

@Brewbom yes, there’s more to IM than just looking at Twitter followers and Klout scores! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A3: Several, @commun_it @twtrland are my favs, of course, @Traackr is splendiferous! #CMWorld

@lttlewys

@michelelinn @Brewbom And they may also have the time/inclination to help even more. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@michelelinn fully agree! influencer partnerships are hard freaking work! #CMWorld

@Brewbom

@stekenwright yes! Great tip! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A3 – So many tools available but it’s more about using them effectively not just using them #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@Topicurious heck yeah! #CMWorld

@Brewbom

@Brewbom & Klout is an indicator of potential influence, not actual influence. Too many brands don’t get that yet (agencies too!) #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@Casielee it can definitely help validate your POV as well #cmworld

@SFerika

@StudioOne absolutely. As with many things, such as native advertising, unscrupulous SEOs have already ruined it for you #CMWorld

@stekenwright

A3. @CMIContent I used Feedly to aggregate all of the influencers’ blogs and engage when relevant content is posted #CMWorld

@devonna_j

@businessgp Doing wonderful, thanks great to see you!! #CMWorld

@lttlewys

@amandamaks Ha! They should not have scheduled #CMWorld chat over your lunch hour 🙂

@KyleAkerman

@CMIContent There’s a process. Described here: http://www.firepolemarketing.com/get-noticed-boost-credibility/ (I was thinking of this one when I mentioned twitter chats) #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

@KyleAkerman Ha! Without goals, what do you plan for / towards? I talk about business goals all. the. time #cmworld

@michelelinn

A3) I agree with most here… a good ol’ Excel spreadsheet and a lot of time is all you need 😉 #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

@FiveMinPro ROFL! Asking the right questions so the data is accurate 😉 And, set goals! #CMWorld

@lttlewys

@palkoviz @CMIContent most definitely 🙂 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@KyleAkerman @amandamaks It’s ours too! 😉 #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@Steph_Montreuil Absolutely! With my blogger hat on, this is some rubbish I receive: http://theguestale.com/2013/11/pitch-stories-bloggers/ #CMWorld

@CMRLee

“@lttlewys: @businessgp Doing wonderful, thanks great to see you!! #CMWorld” <- All the better for seeing you too 🙂

@businessgp

A1: Influencer marketing isn’t JUST metrics or voice. It’s having something to say and knowing how to say it to make people care. #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

Q4: What techniques do you use for influencer marketing? Does anything seem to work best? (eg. Email vs. tweet) #CMWorld

@Brewbom You definitely need someone committed to do this or else it won’t get done . . . at least not consistently #cmworld

@michelelinn

@MichaelMooneyy exactly, not sure there is some “golden apple” tool out there. To get in good with influencers you gotta work! #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@KyleAkerman I’ll forgive them cc @CMIContent #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@Jupiter_Labs Yes, the old-school approach is “tried and true!” 🙂 #CMWorld

@devonna_j

@SFerika thanks Erika. Hope all is well with you? Been a while. #CMWorld

@businessgp

@Brewbom In that case a little flattery would probably go a long way 🙂 #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

@MichaelMooneyy Any tips on finding the right people with Twtrland and followerwonk? #cmworld

@michelelinn

Can #mobileapps be used to improve customer engagement and ultimately increase revenue? http://ow.ly/tgUNY #cmworld

@BlueRocketInc

@CMIContent @lttlewys agree and I’d add @SproutSocial to this list; makes it easier to ID influencers you converse with #cmworld

@SFerika

@Jupiter_Labs that will certainly do it. Best tool is rolling up your sleeves. 🙂 #cmworld

@z_Paper

A3: Can also use tools like followerwonk to see an influencer’s influencers. #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

@amandamaks: Good ol’ fashioned research using social & talking to customers can work very well for smaller orgs for IM. #CMWorld

@CreativeChaosCD

A4. @CMIContent Commenting on blog posts works best for me… and suggesting relevant content I’ve come across #CMWorld

@devonna_j

@lttlewys But wouldn’t @commun_it work with your network/people who already interacted with you? #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A4: Depends on what information – sometimes tweet, sometimes email – sometimes they give you their preference in their “about me” #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

#CMWorld People only influence if you have a ’cause’ they feel is worthy of influencing others about.

@businessgp

@SFerika Thanks, Erika! @CMIContent @lttlewys #cmworld

@SproutSocial

@pamelamuldoon mmhmm, it takes time. You can’t expect someone to give their stamp of approval if you haven’t invested any time #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@CMIContent @michelelinn for sure! #cmworld

@Brewbom

@devonna_j Yup, in some areas it might be worth it to be old-school 😉 It also reminds me to also look for influencers offline #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

@businessgp I’m having a fun and productive new year so far 🙂 How are you? #cmworld

@SFerika

A4. Giving them honest advice always works. Try to develop a relationship instead of selling them something #cmworld

@StudioOne

A3: Influencers CREATE the work that others use as templates. Be original and genuine. #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

@michelelinn @MichaelMooneyy Would be interested in some insight too 😉 #CMWorld

@palkoviz

@lttlewys exactly, all about the prep! #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

A4: I got for the progression – tweets, to blogs, with lots of e-mail newsletter CTAs! #CMWorld

@rowdy406

@SFerika I am having a ball as they say. Busy and exciting. #cmworld

@businessgp

@amandamaks I do not disagree there at all… 🙂 #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@palkoviz @lttlewys @commun_it It isn’t always about finding “new” people – but also the ones in your community already. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A4: What works best is usually a reflection of where the target consumer is most likely to engage. So it depends… #cmworld

@angusmacaulay

@StudioOne Good point! #CMWorld

@devonna_j

A4: (flashback) Print can be a truly authentic, appreciated way to reach out. #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

A4: It depends. I like a mix – Twitter, LinkedIn, email, blog commenting. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@palkoviz Yes, it does @commun_it and, I can look at their community, audience and see if it’s a fit or find their influencer #CMWorld

@lttlewys

@CMIContent #cmworld A4 Doesn’t matter as long as it’s an organic, natural relationship rather than forced.

@moveo

Top popular tags webtech: 1^ #cmworld 2^ #Tech 3^ #Digital 4^ #marketing 5^ #job http://webtech.twirus.com

@top_webtech

A4: It all depends on the influencer. Go to the channel that makes the most sense for your audience. #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

A4. Talking to journalists often starts via email and moves on to a phone call…Twitter might not be enough to grab attention #CMWorld

@stekenwright

@CMIContent @lttlewys @commun_it Good point #CMWorld

@palkoviz

@palkoviz @lttlewys @commun_it Similar to the concept of getting a return customer is easier than finding a new one. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

As example I am very influential in craft coffee & craft beer because of my background but I won’t promote anything not perfect #CMWorld

@Brewbom

@michelelinn @palkoviz Search relevant keywords and titles, that gives you a broad pool. Then you have to engage and track. #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

A4: And you can’t forget about meeting in person if that is an option. Try to find what events your influencers attend and go! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

.@amandamaks Putting in the time is critical; for me it’s not work since I am making new friends & building grt relationships #CMWorld

@pamelamuldoon

Sorry to miss the chat today 🙁 We are doing client monthly calls this morning. Y’all have fun! http://nurph.com/cmworld #cmworld

@Scripti_Ashley

A4 #CMWorld I try to reach them on as many platforms as possible, spread out over time and providing value. A comment here, a tweet there etc

@Jupiter_Labs

@businessgp or if you give them something they want… Be it money or product. Which is skewing the influencer pool/reputation #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@lttlewys Thanks. #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A4. Influencers get pinged any time someone shares their content on Twitter, so your message may well get missed #CMWorld

@stekenwright

@amandamaks @pamelamuldoon for ex when I get an influencer pitch from a brand I’ve never used, and no trial, I boggle #cmworld

@SFerika

@mikemyers614 Print has been a huge focus lately! #CMWorld (Right, @nenadsenic?)

@CMIContent

A4 – I know it might be old fashioned but networking & actually talking to people still works wonders! #cmworld

@z_Paper

A4: Another idea is to test automation to a certain extent. Set up an influencer nurture campaign that goes out biweekly/monthly #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@amandamaks Yes, especially if they happen to be local or in town for an industry event! #CMWorld

@devonna_j

A4: Start with existing conversations and influencers and jump in with them, on whatever channel is active #CMWorld

@bex__

@z_Paper Actual face to face interaction!?! #cmworld

@StudioOne

Build relationships before you start asking for anything. Be authentic. Connect on platforms where you have previously connected #cmworld

@michelelinn

@amandamaks do the channels change as you get more involved? #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

@amandamaks Right! Think of it from the other side of it. When we want to get on someone’s radar, we use those tactics. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A4: Thoughtful comments about their content, sharing their content with others, demo your relevance to what they care about #cmworld

@ardath421

@michelelinn That’s. Why. You. Rule. #goals #CMWorld

@KyleAkerman

A4: tools like Tribrr and Klout can help but not replace actual contact #CMWorld

@Brewbom

A4 – Like all marketing interacting with influencers where THEY are not where you want them to be is what works best. #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@stekenwright yes, sometimes picking up the phone is key! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@MichaelMooneyy @michelelinn Thanks #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A3: shameless plug, but our search by keyword(s) can help you manually find influencers that other automated tools will miss. #CMWorld

@Topicurious

@z_Paper yes, and then you get an intern to keep track of your Influencer Marketing efforts 😉 #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

I agree @Steph_Montreuil though ‘Hiring assassins is never quite as genuine as recruiting evangelists’ #CMWorld

@businessgp

@amandamaks agree re: blog commenting. You look less like you want something when you leave a comment. Personal, but still public #CMWorld

@stekenwright

A4: After you’ve defined your market + influencers, guest posts work – if you know what you want to say + its relevant. #cmworld

@tamarweiss

@Topicurious Checking it out now 🙂 #cmworld

@devonna_j

@z_Paper it really does 🙂 Still the most effective way to build relationships for me #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@CMIContent I think you have to combine several, in the right order: blog commenting, social media interactions, then email #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

Q5: How can you advance past your “usual suspects” to find new influencers or ambassadors in your community? #CMWorld

A4: Building a relationship, talking with them, sharing their content and meeting them in person. Find a common interest #CMWorld

@lttlewys

@KyleAkerman Ha! Not so much. I am just goal-obsessed lately 🙂 #cmworld

@michelelinn

@businessgp that made me laugh out loud 😉 And so very true! #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

#CMWorld A4 If it shows you have had to think and make a real effort then it’ll be recognised and valued.

@businessgp

@MichaelMooneyy Great tips — thanks! #cmworld

@michelelinn

@michelelinn @KyleAkerman She is. 🙂 #CMWorld

@cmcphillips

@MichaelMooneyy @amandamaks They certainly should. The more personal the relationship the more they will trumpet your cause! #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@StudioOne @z_Paper eye contact? I don’t know… #CMWorld

@rowdy406

@stekenwright it’s a good tactic to get on the radar and start building the relationship. Makes the next step a little warmer #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@CMIContent @amandamaks Glad I’m on Central time. But I’m still snacking, though. #CMWorld

@KyleAkerman

A5: the answer is in the question (par usual) you have to be IN the community @CMIContent #CMWorld

@Brewbom

A5. Ask them to recommend you to different bloggers. #cmworld

@StudioOne

“@Steph_Montreuil: @businessgp that made me laugh out loud 😉 And so very true! #CMWorld” <- *looks innocently* well I couldn’t resist

@businessgp

.@SFerika @amandamaks It just doesn’t work to put your stamp of approval on something blindly; it tends to blow up #CMWorld

@pamelamuldoon

A5: good old research. When it’s always the same influencers, influencing the same audience in same niche, it gets old #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@MichaelMooneyy I think so. IE, automated nurture probably isn’t the best for someone you’ve become friendly with. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@Steph_Montreuil Absolutely is for us. One on one is the best! #cmworld

@z_Paper

@Steph_Montreuil @z_Paper you guys are spot on… love it 🙂 Nothing builds relationships more than 1-on-1 contact #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

A5: @CMIContent Take a look at up-&-comers who engage with popular influencers. Also, tools like “Tribe” help #CMWorld

@devonna_j

A5: Take another look, have you explored and lurkers or newbs that have showed up? Tweaking a keyword may give u new options #CMWorld

@lttlewys

One way to finding new connections: Being open to talking and engaging with new people. #CMWorld @CMIContent

@CTrappe

A4: LinkedIn is also a great #content and influencer platform. #CMWorld

@CreativeChaosCD

@CMIContent A5 #cmworld You can’t stop building relationships around your brand. Never get too comfortable. Keep discovering newcomers.

@moveo

@MichaelMooneyy for a new connection, I start w social>blog comment>email>call if possible #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@rowdy406 @StudioOne Sounds crazy I know but… 🙂 #cmworld

@z_Paper

@pamelamuldoon @amandamaks seriously! it’s not in the brand’s best interest either b/c endorsements are not authentic #cmworld

@SFerika

A5: Being part of the community you are trying to influence will help you identify rising stars early #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@Steph_Montreuil Agree! And growth comes to a screeching halt. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

I try to come up with the opposite of the ideal – find & engage them. The results can be surprising. @CMIContent #cmworld

@rowdy406

Who else cares about the things you care about? Reach out to them. #CMWorld @CMIContent

@CTrappe

@rowdy406 @z_Paper That might be too much #CMWorld

@StudioOne

A4: Engage influencers by commenting on their content, sharing it, and showing you are relevant to what they care about #cmworld

@Insightera

A5: Being part of the community also means you don’t have to approach influencers with cold pitches and have trust already #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@CMIContent BTW, a new B2B newspaper will be out next week. Excited! 4 versions for 4 different groups @mikemyers614@mikemyers614 #CMWorld

@NenadSenic

@rowdy406 @StudioOne @z_Paper Shocking, some people may be intimidated in today digital world 😉 #CMWorld

@palkoviz

#CMWorld A4 Engage, engage & engage. Simple really. People gravitate to those they find interesting.

@businessgp

@CMIContent precisely and who believes an influencer that endorses everything anyway! #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

Hey guys, I’m joining the conversation. Sorry I’m late. #CMWorld

@rmsvieira

@cmcphillips I have to second that for you! #cmworld

@michelelinn

A5: Network like crazy. Attend events in different areas – get out of your bubble. Talk to customers, partners, sales. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A5: Look for the surprising ways people use your product and find influencers who share that perspective – expand your vision #cmworld

@ardath421

Being approachable helps build connections. #CMWorld

@CTrappe

A5: Ask new customers, or customers that represent a new demographic/persona etc. They’ll likely share new influencers. #cmworld

@angusmacaulay

A5 – Work. Too many people use the “if you build it they will come” mentality. Bull! Get in there and get dirty. #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

Who is the opposite of my target audience? Where’s the last place my influencer X would be found? Go there. Now. #CMWorld

@rowdy406

@amandamaks You never know who you can meet. #cmworld

@StudioOne

@Topicurious It’s not shameless if it’s helpful #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

A5: Go “off the grid” and you’ll be amazed at who you’ll find. Social presence isn’t everything. #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

A5) Be inspired to think outside the box! Ask your influencers who influenced them and look at related niches #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

@lttlewys I like the idea of tweaking keywords to expand search. Good tip. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A5: make sure people in your circles know the value you can add so they can recommend when a need arises. #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

@rmsvieira Welcome, Rafael! We’re glad you’re here! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

Yes! MT @amandamaks: A4: Don’t forget meeting in person if that is an option. Find what events your influencers attend and go! #CMWorld

@KyleAkerman

A5 – Nuture the relationships. Do all you can to get to that 1-on-1 level. People will often weed themselves out as phonies. #cmworld

@z_Paper

@StudioOne Amen! And you never know where! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A5: Ask internally. Either your marketing team, or esp. product dev team may have a pulse on new industry influencers #cmworld

@angusmacaulay

@ardath421 I love your inclusion of the word “thoughtful” re. leaving comments. IMO, better to have fewer, stronger influencers #cmworld

@michelelinn

@businessgp @Steph_Montreuil Did I miss where assassins came into the convo? Suddenly even more interesting… #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

A5. An influencer could be anyone who uses your product – might have a smaller following, but a glowing review to a few is better #CMWorld

@stekenwright

A5: A speaker who can sell out an event is valuable, with or without a LinkedIn profile #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

@Erin_E_Palmer Possibly. Depends on the market though. #cmworld

@tamarweiss

@businessgp @CMIContent How goes it. Are we having fun this morning? #cmworld

@NickKellet

@atxcopywriter @businessgp lol – if you look up the thread you will see it 😉 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A5: Also ask influencers you trust who else you should be talking to in order to find new connections #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@Jupiter_Labs I like that – live by the motto: “you don’t ask, you don’t get”. #CMWorld

@rowdy406

@amandamaks Yea, I agree. You don’t want to go backwards. #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

@StudioOne @rowdy406 hehehe #cmworld

@z_Paper

We have been fortunate to find some great influencers and build an amazing community just from our #CMWorld twitter chats!

@CMIContent

@michelelinn Thanks! I think “thoughtful” is key – anyone can leave a general comment – not impressive #cmworld

@ardath421

“@atxcopywriter: @businessgp @Steph_Montreuil Did I miss where assassins came into convo? Suddenly even more interesting… #CMWorld” < 🙂

@businessgp

@CMIContent I might not be able to participate after all, having issues with TweetChat here: “No one has tweeted into #CMWorld yet.”… 🙁

@rmsvieira

Q6: Is there a “right” size of influencer community? How many influencers or groups do you have? One per key topic area? Persona? #CMWorld

@CMIContent A5: Ask your network, 3 degrees of separation & all, someone in your network will know a relevant influencer u don’t #CMWorld

@KDADouglas

@michelelinn @ardath421 ditto. I argue that 10-15 influencers is more than plenty! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@CMIContent Pay attention to who comments on the big influencers blogs. Active comm members could be future influencers #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

Yes!MT @CMIContent We have been fortunate to find some great influencers and build an amazing community just from our twitter chats #cmworld

@StudioOne

@MichaelMooneyy yeah, you risk being too impersonal / phony, I think #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@rmsvieira I had the same issue but now I’m using @tchatio’s tool. Try it maybe #cmworld

@devonna_j

@businessgp I think we’ve found the trouble maker of #CMWorld chat! @atxcopywriter

@Steph_Montreuil

+1: @amandamaks: A5: Network like crazy. Attend events. #CMWorld >> I discover so much when I get outside of my comfort zone

@michelelinn

@amandamaks That is the process I was looking for. Great insight! #CMWorld

@MichaelMooneyy

#CMWorld A6 Quality over quantity every time. Just like content.

@businessgp

A6. It depends on what you are trying to market. Specialize it to your clients needs. #cmworld

@StudioOne

@stekenwright Social media can be a good place to start building relationships with journos. #cmworld

@MontseCano

@ardath421 @michelelinn totally agree Ardath! Being thoughtful and genuine sets you apart from others. 😉 #CMWorld

@bernieborges

A6 – The right amount is however many you can handle. If you can’t give them the attention they need cut back on the volume. #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@rowdy406 Yes and if you built a genuine relationship with your influencers, they will be happy to help you and point you to them #CMworld

@Jupiter_Labs

A6: right size depends on team size. If you are small, start w 5-10. Can handle more? 10-15 influencers could be a good target. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Yes, be human, make friends. “@businessgp #CMWorld Engage, engage & engage. Simple really. People gravitate to those they find interesting.”

@maxwelllauren

“@z_Paper: A4 – I know it might be old fashioned but networking & actually talking to people still works wonders!

@MontseCano

@atxcopywriter Do you know @Scripti_Ashley? #ATXconnections #CMWorld

@KyleAkerman

@CMIContent the influencer depends on the strategy. Look for a new influencer for each piece of content you create #CMWorld

@stekenwright

A6: Number depends. What are all the ways Influencers can serve to advantage? Some are good at one thing, some are good at others #cmworld

@ardath421

#cmworld where are the questions?

@NickKellet

“@Steph_Montreuil: @businessgp I think we’ve found the trouble maker of #CMWorld chat! @atxcopywriter” <- Where. I want to know too!!!

@businessgp

Totally depends on your goals & budget – one size doesn’t fit all #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@amandamaks @ardath421: Agree that 10 – 15 people is manageable & authentic. Otherwise, it can get unwieldy and/or “assembly line” #cmworld

@michelelinn

@amandamaks @michelelinn @ardath421 if influencer pool is larger than that, maybe split up across team? #cmworld

@SFerika

A6 – I really think it depends on who you are. for some a small network works wonders for others larger. #cmworld

@z_Paper

A6. @CMIContent I have 10 per topic area: 5 big fish, 5 little fish. Considering making it a smaller group #CMWorld

@devonna_j

@MichaelMooneyy happy to help! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Quality over quantity #CMWorld

@rowdy406

#CMWorld #hashtagclient | street as a service

@netgreenbuildng

@amandamaks Hard to overestimate the value of networking. So much depends on who you know (and who knows you) #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

Always quality over quantity #CMWorld

@rowdy406

.@CMIContent A6: Quality over quantity. The community must be authentic members who truly love brand/topic. #CMworld

@UpwardLabs

@NickKellet tweetchat is wonky. There from the @CMIContent account as usual #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A6) Cirtiosity: there is problem I face, which is that my communities’ influences are actually *against* the brand… #CMWorld

@rmsvieira

A6: Your group doesn’t have to be huge, influence will grow as each member of your group is also a member of other groups, etc. #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

A6: If they have something interesting for your audience, why not to bring new ones? #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A6) Having more than one Influencer per “Topic” is key to amplify the message exponentially #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

@rowdy406 True, but what happens when you have a larger quantity of good quality influencers? That’s my issue :-/ #CMWorld

@devonna_j

MT @FiveMinPro: The right amount is however many you can handle. If you can’t give the attention they need cut back on the volume. #cmworld

@SFerika

A1: Influencer Marketing is like “co-signing on steroids” If your #Content is #Quality you get Major Credibility & Instant Status #CMWORLD

@WalidTerrell

@SFerika @amandamaks @michelelinn @ardath421 Sure. The old divide & conquer tactic! Nice! #cmworld

@z_Paper

A6: More than size, it’s about finding influencers who can also be collaborators – it’s a game of approximate equals. #cmworld

@NickKellet

@amandamaks With all of this great advice you’re providing, you can count on email from me to ask you to blog for @cmicontent 🙂 #cmworld

@michelelinn

A6) Curiosity: there is problem I face, which is that my communities’ influences are actually *against* the brand… #CMWorld

@rmsvieira

.@SFerika @michelelinn @ardath421 dividing up a list is a great idea for a larger team. Great stuff, Erika. #CMworld

@amandamaks

@businessgp True, but I think if they are all the same all the time, it could get a bit boring… #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A6: Sounds like a topic to focus on when creating a strategy. One awesome relationship may be more powerful than a bunch of RTers. #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

@SFerika That is a good suggestion! #cmworld >> Split influencers across team if too many

@michelelinn

@atxcopywriter it’s like they say. You are who you know. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@Steph_Montreuil @CMIContent I know cc @medialabrat > #tweetchat needs a kick this morning 🙂 #cmworld

@NickKellet

@rmsvieira Wow! Can you give us an example? #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@michelelinn @CMIContent 🙂 happy to contribute to the CMI blog again. Hit me up! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Do you know @sheldrake’s definition of “influence” @businessgp? (From his book, The Business of Influence) It. Is. The. Best. #CMWorld

@jgombita

#CMWorld Twitter Chats http://contentmarketingworld.com/cmworld-twitter-chats/ Make attendance a ritual!

@Rogercparker

@devonna_j @rowdy406 don’t lose focus on the quality of your interactions trying to get them all 🙂 #cmworld

@z_Paper

A6: there is no “right” size, what works and they can change, need to figure what works for what you are trying to achieve #CMWorld

@lttlewys

A2: First Establish #Goals & Priorities, then understand how much real #Value you can contribute & what increased credibility means #CMWORLD

@WalidTerrell

@NickKellet Agree. This goes back to @amandamaks point that IM isn’t just about sharing but collaborating. You are great at that! #cmworld

@michelelinn

Q7: What other ways can you use your influencers in addition to asking them to share your content? #CMWorld

The size of audience has little to do with, if you’re in a micro-niche there will still be influencers #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

Agree @michelelinn You need to get out from behind your computer & meet IRL #cmworld

@heidicohen

@Rogercparker Thanks, Roger! We’d love your brilliance if you have time to pop in! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@z_Paper Good advice. Thank you! #cmworld

@devonna_j

@Erin_E_Palmer @businessgp I’d Rather Have 1 Loyal Friend Than a 100 Fake Friends #cmworld

@StudioOne

I agree @palkoviz you need a quality spread like a fine dining menu 🙂 cater to many tastes on a theme. #CMWorld

@businessgp

@lttlewys Exactly – not one size fits all! #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@lttlewys @heidicohen @michelelinn or Google hangout! #cmworld

@StudioOne

@businessgp I like that metaphor. It’s always about the good mix. #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A7. Influencers can introduce you to new trends and technologies w/in your industry. They tend to be early adopters #cmworld

@devonna_j

“@z_Paper: @devonna_j @rowdy406 don’t lose focus on the quality of your interactions trying to get them all 🙂

@MontseCano

A7: Invite them to speak, showcase their stuff, ask them to help with product innovation, audience insights…lots of things! #cmworld

@ardath421

Q7: Identifying pain points and future growth opportunities. #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

A7: Influencers can be a great sounding board, they may also appreciate being asked, included. #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

Grt pt @businessgp: #CMWorld >> People only influence if you have a ’cause’ they feel is worthy >> I think purpose-driven marketing is key

@michelelinn

@StudioOne @lttlewys @heidicohen @michelelinn We should do a hangout on air for one of our twitter chats! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A7: Co-create content. Host a Google hangout and you’ve got your self a great video interview. Turn it into a blog post and boom! #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Influencers are not like Pokeman — you shouldn’t try to collect them all! 😉 #cmworld

@SFerika

@tamarweiss @businessgp Good point – I sometimes forget that every business is different #CMWorld

@palkoviz

@palkoviz thanks. Yes you do and also never forget people take in information differently too. #CMWorld

@businessgp

A3: #SEO is about following already established trends, but understanding consumers socially can give you real-time #Branding power #CMWorld

@WalidTerrell

If you put our great content, engage & be helpful, your influencers and community will find you. #cmworld

@NickKellet

A7: you shouldn’t use your influencers, EVER but give them ways to help, explain what you are doing! People want to help #CMWorld

@lttlewys

A7: Ask for feedback or commentary on a piece of content to make it better. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A7 – We actually have used ours as editors/critics of work. Use them as Subject Matter Experts & then give them credit #cmworld

@z_Paper

Collaborate with them. Guest post on their blog. Interview them. #CMworld

@MorganBarnhart

Q7: Make your influencers a part of your content. Interview them. Create a video. #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

@CMIContent YES!! @StudioOne @lttlewys @heidicohen @michelelinn #CMWorld Count me in 🙂

@Steph_Montreuil

A7: they can be another set of eyes an ears about consumers, or competitors #cmworld

@angusmacaulay

A7: Organize a virtual roundtable of influencers and ask each the same 5 questions. Release via blog over a few weeks. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@CMIContent @lttlewys @heidicohen @michelelinn Yes! It would be great to see your faces! #CMWorld

@StudioOne

A7: Guest posts. On their blog or just somewhere where they will see it. Choose a topic they care about! #cmworld

@tamarweiss

A7 – Don’t get them to just spread your content, have them help you create content. Co-creation can increase the quality volume! #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@StudioOne I have participated in Google Hangouts, and they are fun. Great idea! #cmworld

@michelelinn

Pick their brains – use influencers as educators. Get them engaged and invested. #cmworld

@rowdy406

It’s not a case of build it & they will come with zero barriers to entry anymore. Be useful, reach out, engage! #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A7: Think about offering a seat on your advisory board (if you have one). Get advice to help push your company forward #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@ardath421 when a brand I love asks me to come in for user testing, I’m there with bells on. I love being included in the process. #cmworld

@SFerika

@businessgp I think B2B and B2C should be purpose-driven, too (not just nonprofits) #cmworld

@michelelinn

A7) Ask for their opinion to make the product better… they know the needs of your TM inside out #CMworld

@Jupiter_Labs

@rowdy406 Yes. If they know that it will also benefit them, then they’ll want to help. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A7: Shine a light on the influencers you want to engage with. Make it easier for others to find them. And they will find you #cmworld

@NickKellet

@CMIContent A7 #cmworld Ask for their insight into your customer base (their people). But ask how you can help them too -always reciprocate.

@moveo

@lttlewys Feel free to use, just don’t abuse 🙂 #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

“@michelelinn: @businessgp I think B2B and B2C should be purpose-driven, too (not just nonprofits) #cmworld” <- Everything needs a purpose.

@businessgp

@ardath421 @amandamaks Or ask a question since they have expertise. #CMWorld

@tamarweiss

A7: Help them, help you. Always give before you ask. So many brands ask, ask, ask. There should always be something in return #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@KyleAkerman Morning Kyle. Saw your avatar fly by 🙂 #cmworld

@NickKellet

A4: Establish #Context for yourself & your #Content. #Engagement is the key & displaying that you have real #Value to connect with #CMWorld

@WalidTerrell

Hey @NickKellet 😉 #cmworld

@lttlewys

A7: Organize an event to get influencers all in one room and like others have said, pick their brains to the extreme #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A7: speaking opps, building partnerships #CMWorld

@CreativeChaosCD

@amandamaks Great idea. I’ve seen that develop from blogger group to advisory board with a nonprofit I work with. Love progress! #CMWorld

@cmcphillips

@Steph_Montreuil absolutely. Have to remember it is a two way street! GIVE & take. #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

Need to build a relationship with Influencers, not assume that you have a right for their input @mikemyers614 #cmworld

@heidicohen

#CMWorld A7 But never forget people asked for a faster horse not a motorcar so they are only PART of the answer.

@businessgp

.@NickKellet definitely, like all relationships there has to be give and take, what’s in it for them as well as you #CMWorld

@KDADouglas

@CMIContent You can make new connections through them, maybe get on their list of referrals/recommendations to gain new clients #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

Q8: Do you have content marketing programs to help nurture your influencers? How often do you reach out (regularly or w/new news)? #cmworld

@amandamaks Yes. If you don’t have one, great reason to build one! #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

@cmcphillips @amandamaks love being able to intro people when special groups are formed!! #cmworld

@lttlewys

BTW, a new #CCOmag is out. Grab it, folks! 🙂 #cmworld

@lttlewys

@NenadSenic There is a great article about slow content in there! 🙂 #cmworld

@michelelinn

@heidicohen precisely 🙂 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

Never forget that there must be something in it for your influencers – it’s not all about you 🙂 What do you give them? #cmworld

@ardath421

A7: Inviting influencers to contribute to your content with their answers to thought leading questions is a great way to engage #cmworld

@NickKellet

@CMIContent Sure! When managing gaming communities, they expect you to update the game with what they want. And as a CoMa, I can’t. #CMWorld

@rmsvieira

@cmcphillips I will be asking you about the advisory board! #cmworld

@michelelinn

Count me inRT @CMIContent @StudioOne @lttlewys @heidicohen @michelelinn We should do a hangout on air for 1 of our twitter chats! #CMWorld

@heidicohen

A7: Have them speak at your twice yearly events 🙂 #CMWorld @CMIContent

@KyleAkerman

A8: I don’t have a formal program at Lattice, since our community is on the smaller side. I’ll reach out personally. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A8 – Do your best at constant contact. Build the relationship don’t just do event announcements! #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

A8: if you don’t – you should! And a Facebook page isn’t “an influencer program” 😉 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A5: EXTENSIVE #Research of networks connected to networks. Forward #Vision can give you top #Value with a lesser know influencer #CMWorld

@WalidTerrell

I have to head out. Thanks! @amandamaks @cmcphillips #cmworld

@MichaelMooneyy

A8. Both our #ContentMarketing strategy & internal Social Ambassador Program contribute to engaging w/ influencers #cmworld

@devonna_j

A8: But in my other life, I’ve seen more automated programs work very well. I think bi-monthly to monthly feels like right. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Always ask the WIIFT/ WIIFU question MT! @KDADouglas @NickKellet relationships = give & take, what’s in it for them as well as you #CMWorld

@NickKellet

@KyleAkerman Great idea! (And more events coming in 2014…exciting!) #CMWorld

@CMIContent

A8: Also consider how much content you have to share when setting your contact rhythm w influencers. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A8) Don’t just connect to connect; value their time and only reach out with highly valuable content #CMWorld

@Jupiter_Labs

@rowdy406

@heidicohen @CMIContent @StudioOne @lttlewys @michelelinn YES! #cmworld hangout would be AWESOME.

@SFerika

A8 – Isn’t the goal to have influencers spreading your content? Stay in touch with & help them & they’ll reciprocate. #cmworld

Respect influencers time! Often it’s their scarcest resources! (Translation: you may need to compensate them) @FiveMinPro #cmworld

@heidicohen

@MichaelMooneyy @amandamaks @cmcphillips Thank you Michael! Glad you were here for most of it! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@heidicohen great to see you in #cmworld today!

@SFerika

A8: Rather than try to force it or do things arbitrarily, make nurturing your influencers a part of your content strategy. #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

A8: again it’s not one size fits all, but don’t only come out to play when you need to ask something #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@lttlewys @SFerika They also aren’t tradable! They can get scuffed around the edges with too much use. #CMWorld Influencers <> Pokemon

@NickKellet

@heidicohen @FiveMinPro @amandamaks That was one question we took out bc of time. Is there ever a reason to pay an influencer? #CMWorld

@CMIContent

Most “influencers” are all about their “influencing” .. not about benefitting you. #cmworld

@LoisMarketing

@amandamaks Are you the one person who reaches out to influencers, or do multiple people do this? #cmworld

@michelelinn

@heidicohen sure. Compensation can come in many forms & should always be on the table. #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

@MichaelMooneyy @cmcphillips thanks for stopping by, Michael. Glad to hear you are acting on lessons from my Master Class. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

All businesses (B2C, B2B, NFP & solopreneur) need higher goals than make $## @michelelinn: @businessgp #cmworld

@heidicohen

A7) From my experience, other users really like to see influencers participating in the community. So, motivate them to be active! #CMWorld

@rmsvieira

Heh @NickKellet you make influencers sound like puppies!! @SFerika #cmworld

@lttlewys

#cmworld Arrg want in on this convo but got a meeting cc @heidicohen @NickKellet @michelelinn @ardath421

@ChaseMcMichael

Remember that your influencers might not be looking for $$ – what can you offer that they need (especially if you don’t have $$) #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

lol MT @NickKellet: @lttlewys @SFerika They also aren’t tradable! They can get scuffed around the edges with too much use. #CMWorld

@SFerika

@heidicohen @FiveMinPro Compensation is an excellent point. It doesn’t always have to be a one-way, free relationship. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Absolutlely! @heidicohen @FiveMinPro #cmworld

@Mademoisellelek

A6: That’s really more based on your own objectives. Really though #Quality trumps Quantity. Not all networks are created equal #CMWorld

@WalidTerrell

@heidicohen @michelelinn People first, numbers second is the ONLY sustainable way. #CMWorld

@businessgp

@FiveMinPro @heidicohen Agree! Reciprocity/compensation doesn’t always have to equal dollars. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@CMIContent Ooooh. That’s a tease if I ever saw one. #CMWorld

@KyleAkerman

Q9: What are the best ways to learn about your influencers – current or potential? #CMWorld

@ChaseMcMichael Hi Chase! The transcript will be on the #CMWorld blog soon! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

#CMWorld Help your influencers look good in front of their audiences. They love social currency.

@businessgp

@LoisMarketing That is very true. Way to chime in with a reality check! hehehe Doing research to eliminate those types is key 🙂 #cmworld

@FiveMinPro

A9: Ask questions, explore your community. Use metrics to see what is working #cmworld

@lttlewys

A9. Research what they are interested in and use metrics #cmworld

@StudioOne

@michelelinn We share it, depending who has the strongest connection for the most part. Also, our PR person handles media #cmworld

@amandamaks

.@StudioOne @businessgp Exactly! I wrote about this a couple of years ago: http://www.timsackett.com/2011/09/15/buying-twitter-followers-wont-help-your-brand/ #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

A7: Just being able to tap into their #Wealth of #Understanding & #Knowledge can be worth it’s weight in #Gold! #CMWorld

@WalidTerrell

@MediaLabRat still not working for me, maybe it needs to run a little longer to warm up 😉 @NickKellet @CMIContent #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@LoisMarketing You think so? I feel like most know how valuable community is, and want to engage with and help those in theirs #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

@WalidTerrell Absolutely! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

Good one! >> @businessgp: #CMWorld Help your influencers look good in front of their audiences. They love social currency.

@michelelinn

Is #slowcontent like#slowfood? Or are you referring to content quality?? @michelelinn @NenadSenic @NickKellet #cmworld

@heidicohen

@michelelinn I’ll reach out to others on my team and ask them to ping a specific influencer, when I know they have a better real #CMWorld

@amandamaks

A9: Best way to learn what your influencers want/need? Ask them. #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

@amandamaks Thanks! Love to hear how others handle this #cmworld

@michelelinn

@LoisMarketing Might depend on industry though? Blogging and content marketing are more relationship-focused industries than most #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

A9) Read their blog and see to which comments they reply, and mirror them. Find out what questions they ask and find answers! #CMworld

@Jupiter_Labs

@atxcopywriter Yes I think so. Most are disconnected one-to-one outside of their tightly-controlled ‘sphere’. . #cmworld

@LoisMarketing

A9: Listen, be part of the community you want to influence, keep your finger on the pulse of users. Can’t come in and demand info #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A9: Compare & contrast different influencers. See how they operate. See what you can take on board from their best practices #CMworld

@NickKellet

A9: Consume their content, try to understand what they care about, engage on social, meet in person #CMWorld

@amandamaks

It was fun participating in @CMIContent & @amandamaks’s #TwitterChat. GREAT insight. Gotta run. Thanks everyone! *waves* #cmworld

@devonna_j

@atxcopywriter I said “most” 🙂 #cmworld

@LoisMarketing

Thanks to @CMIContent and @amandamaks for great chat, unfortunately have to go. Lots of great info. #CMWorld

@palkoviz

A9: If you are looking for that information when you need it, it’s too late. You need to build the relationships first #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@palkoviz @amandamaks Thanks, Ziata! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@CMIContent Read a lot of their content and interviews, join email lists and follow on social media #CMWorld

@atxcopywriter

A9) Explore & understand your community. Metrics can help a lot, but it’s important that you’re attentive to understand its core. #CMWorld

@rmsvieira

A9: Flatter them with questions. Influencers = Ego. Stoke the fire, enjoy the warmth #CMWorld

@SamBrennand

Q9: Like a relationship, you want to really listen and don’t be afraid to spice things up. No one likes a rut! #CMWorld

@Erin_E_Palmer

A9: Influencers are people, too. People want to feel heard. To learn about your influencers, ask them questions & listen to them. #CMWorld

@RebRuther

@michelelinn Of course! I’ll also ask for intros too, so I can eliminate a bottleneck down the road #CMWorld

@amandamaks

Q8: Developing a relationship with an influencer should be done 1to1, implementing a program 4 it seems artificial #CMWorld

@KDADouglas

@CMIContent A9 no substitute for putting in the time to get to know them; follow+read+engage. #cmworld

@SFerika

@NenadSenic @heidicohen @globalcopywrite @michelelinn Serializing your content it a great way to have people savor the experience #cmworld

@NickKellet

@amandamaks yes to all of the above. #cmworld

@rowdy406

#slowcontent is an article @NenadSenic wrote for CCO. It was all about print. @heidicohen @NickKellet #cmworld

@michelelinn

#CMWorld A9 Your influencers want to look good! They want something unique to share.

@businessgp

A8: It should be more of a natural flow. If your goal is to provide #Value the timetable should coincide with your own development #CMWorld

@WalidTerrell

@michelelinn I am a total #Nerd, I lurve the numbers 😉 It’s a science as much as it is emotional #CMWorld

@lttlewys

@NickKellet I love the term “content anticipation.” Definitely something that people savor #cmworld

@michelelinn

A9: Don’t be afraid to ask/talk about things that are off-topic from your industry. Try to connect on a personal level too. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@lttlewys I think it is awesome how you tie in metrics to every part of your community and marketing programs! #cmworld

@michelelinn

@businessgp Original pieces of high-quality research perhaps…? #CMWorld

@SamBrennand

@atxcopywriter Some still expect some ‘magical formula’ of ‘the right connection’ without working to form the true ‘right’ ones. #cmworld

@LoisMarketing

Don’t look up or down, but across. Honor their uniqueness #respect @RebRuther A9: Influencers are people, too . #CMWorld

@NickKellet

Q10: What are some ways that you’ve seen influencer marketing go really right or really wrong? What could we learn? #CMWorld

Me too! Tease & entice. @michelelinn @NickKellet I love the term “content anticipation.” Definitely something that people savor #cmworld

@NickKellet

@atxcopywriter They look at the ‘gooroos’ and attempt to apply their methods in their own space. That’s what I speak of. #cmworld

@LoisMarketing

@michelelinn @lttlewys if you don’t measure, how do you know what’s working and not working? Being a nerd is useful 🙂 #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@michelelinn I do mostly, some things can’t be measured, and ultimately, it’s a business and should be $$ earned #CMWorld

@lttlewys

Whoa. There are a lot of really smart people on this #CMWorld chat that I’m adding to my “Influencers” list. 😉

@Topicurious

@LoisMarketing instant gratification is never the right goal 🙂 @atxcopywriter #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

@Steph_Montreuil @michelelinn @lttlewys It is very useful! Just need to make sure not to get too bogged down in it. #CMWorld

@cmcphillips

@Steph_Montreuil I agree! I think being a nerd is a huge marketing advantage! #cmworld

@michelelinn

@pamelamuldoon @SFerika @CMIContent It’s about making 1000’s of micro choices. Deciding where to invest your attention & content #cmworld

@NickKellet

A10: Sending pitches w/o doing research. Best example? PR agency sending @cc_chapman an email about mommy bloggers #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@amandamaks This is great way to start the relationship. Can make you stand out from everyone else. Don’t fake it, though. #CMWorld

@KyleAkerman

@LoisMarketing @atxcopywriter I like Gooroos! #cmworld

@NickKellet

“@SamBrennand: @businessgp Original pieces of high-quality research perhaps…? #CMWorld” <- that’s one way and exclusive content too.

@businessgp

Be careful w/ serial presentation since not as strong as individual pieces #cmworld @NickKellet @NenadSenic @globalcopywrite @michelelinn

@heidicohen

A10: It’s simple, but proofread emails and avoid templated/pre-orchestrated emails. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@michelelinn @Steph_Montreuil Thank goodness for that! #CMWorld

@cmcphillips

A10: Ford had a program a few years back that created an army of raving fans and a big active community #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

A10: Asking for a “partnership” when you really mean “sell for us” – Ugh! Get those every week 🙁 #cmworld

@ardath421

A10: Interesting from the B2C vs. B2B standpoint. I’d argue B2B influencers have more legitimacy and can pack more of a punch #CMWorld

@SamBrennand

@NickKellet @pamelamuldoon @CMIContent agree; & important to change it up over time depending upon results and changing objectives #cmworld

@SFerika

@amandamaks 🙂 And sadly it still happens several times a week. #CMWorld

@cc_chapman

@cmcphillips definitely – define priorities @michelelinn @lttlewys #CMWorld

@Steph_Montreuil

Amen–understand Influencers’ POV & help them achieve their goals (With’s In It For Me) @pamelamuldoon #cmworld

@heidicohen

@KyleAkerman yes, it has to be genuine. #CMWorld

@amandamaks

@cmcphillips: @Steph_Montreuil @lttlewys I am a fan of collecting data you will actually USE. No action = not needed #CMWorld

@michelelinn

.@CMIContent A10: bombarding an influencer with dozens of email in a short space of time when you don’t receive a response #CMWorld

@KDADouglas

A10: Don’t fake personalization. It either is or it isn’t. #CMWorld

@mikemyers614

“Nerds” tend to make things too complicated! There’s something to be said for ‘grabbing and keeping’ others 🙂 #cmworld

@LoisMarketing

+ 1 @amandamaks: A10: It’s simple, but proofread emails and avoid templated/pre-orchestrated emails. #CMWorld

@michelelinn

Did we miss your question in today’s chat? Email cathy[at]http://contentinstitute.com and we’ll be in touch. #CMWorld

@CMIContent

@heidicohen @NenadSenic @globalcopywrite @michelelinn That’s debatable. We have become serial consumers. Better reward #cmworld TV leads

@NickKellet

Disagree @businessgp. Believe influencers have a higher calling or reason for their focus. Perhaps you are thinking of egotists? 🙂 #CMWorld

@jgombita

@CMIContent @amandamaks it’s lame to get a templated influencer email addressed to someone else! #cmworld

@SFerika

A10) Mozilla has a very good program that relies on its users (usually long-time users – influencers) to spread the word! #cmworld

Lots of PR folks just spray their pitches. Happens a lot. @digitaldads #cmworld

@heidicohen

@NenadSenic It sure did! Seems each week goes faster and faster! #CMWorld

@CMIContent

Thank you @amandamaks for your great insights on influencer content marketing! Great info for us all. #cmworld
