Jim, congratulations on your event Author Marketing Live! Tell us more about the event, and what inspired you to create #AMLive14.
In 2010, I had my first traditionally published book put on the market. What I learned was that writing the book was the easy part. The hard part? Figuring out how to market the book. So I created a free training site for authors called Author Marketing Club. A few years later I decided that it was time to bring all of that information together in a live event where people who want to write a book, and authors who already have a book come together to learn more about the secrets of successful book writing and publishing. That’s when Author Marketing Live was born.
As an author, what have you learned between the time you published your first book and your most recent book?
The first thing I learned was that having a book is the most amazing credibility builder you will ever have. A book is also the best business card you will ever have. Having a book will bring you business like you’ve never seen before. I’ve also learned that if you want people to read your book, you’re going to need to learn how to market your book on your own.
Why do you think Author Marketing Live aligned well with Content Marketing World?
Content Marketing World attendees know the power of epic content. A book is possibly the most epic type of content you can make for your business or brand. In this day and age of digital, web, blog posts, 6-second Vines and the like, why is book writing still important?
Some content, like a book, just work better for you than other types of content. For example, what is more valuable to you as a professional? A beautiful book that you can show off to potential clients or at job opportunities, or a series of blog posts? A book is truly the best business card you’ll ever have. Use it to impress clients and build credibility and grow your business like you’ve never done before!
The CMI team is writing blog posts about our favorite things to do and see in Cleveland; join in! What are your favorite parts of our great city?
As a life-long Clevelander, it’s hard to pick my favorite things. But when I have people visiting from out of town I always take them to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a fun day of music history and the West Side Market for some good eats. If possible, I try to get them on a boat ride or fishing trip on our wonderful Lake Erie. A trip to Put-In-Bay is always a good time as well.
