I was first introduced to the #CMWorld community three years ago. And now, I can’t imagine my life without it. Think I’m overexaggerating? Some of my closest friends are in the community. When I need help on a project I’m working on, I turn to community members for advice. And clearly, the community is made up of some very good-looking people. (Yes, that’s me on the right side of the photo, but that’s not why I say that. You have to admit; this group is attractive.)
My first interaction with the community was through the weekly #CMWorld Twitter chats. Can you believe they began in 2013? Nearly five years later, we have brought together hundreds of marketers. We have honored three Community Champions at Content Marketing World. (I’m looking at you, Mike Myers, Erika Heald, and Berrak Sarikaya.) And we have exchanged thousands of tweets.
This tight-knit community is smart, generous, and kind. So we turned the tables. Instead of a traditional chat discussing a content marketing topic, we wanted to focus on the content marketer! We learned so much about our community during today’s chat. We have a few highlights here. And if you want to read more responses, take a look at our Twitter Moment.
Several community members studied marketing in college, while others took a less conventional path.
A1: I went to university for Marketing, but I kind of fell into content marketing. My company had a restructuring and that became my new position. I love it 😍 #CMWorld

A1: English major. Worked on the college paper all four years. Worked at newspapers and magazines forever. I decided I wanted to work someplace where I could use my background but where the publication itself was not the business model/product. #CMWorld

A1: From a degree in political science and industrial sociology to banking to diplomacy to financial services to Honda manufacturing to government to non profit to freelance marketing! Out of breath now lol. #cmworld pic.twitter.com/W8mcdCMeqh

A1. The most convoluted path imaginable! engineering > mfg mgmt > s/w UI design > product management > general mgmt > digital mktg. With some stuff in between. #cmworld

Most people don’t have one big accomplishment that stands above all others. But our community isn’t most people! And let me tell you, we are beyond impressed.
A5: Greatest professional achievement: Probably that I successfully launched my biz and have been at it this long on my own (18 years). #cmworld

A5 There’s been many:
2 Awards for game design/writing.
22 marcomm awards over the last 18 months for pieces I’ve developed, written, or produced.
All the books I’ve published, contributed to, edited, or developed.MOST IMPORTANT: Meeting my wife at work. #cmworld

A5: My greatest pro achievement is helping create that wonderful orange party, #CMWorld. From the 600 friends that joined us at #1 in 2011, to the thousands that have joined us since, I am proud of those connections and the community we’ve built. #muchlove

A5: Probably landing a huge client like PokerStars. We do all of their social across North America. Or being named one of my city’s Top 40 Under 40 this year. But I’m just getting started. 😜 #cmworld
