For the love of running (and beer)

Running has been such a part of my life these past few years it has now become more of a routine than a hobby. I rely on my running routine for so much in addition to trying to stay somewhat healthy. I use it as a reason to get off my behind and get out to enjoy nature. I consider it my meditation to melt away stress. I use it as a muse when I am in a creative block.

As the years have passed (I have been regularly running for 10 years), I now using running as a social tool. I have started to get to know other runners since I have joined some running clubs here in the Cleveland area. These groups have not only introduced me to some wonderful new friends but have taken me on routes and journeys through the city and surrounding areas that I would have never experienced on my own.

Of all the training runs and group outings we do, the ones that I love most are the “Brewery Runs.” Here in the city of Cleveland and the surrounding suburbs, there has been a surge of new breweries popping up and the craft/microbrew scene is bigger than ever. Our brewery runs usually start at a local brewery and will have an area mapped out (usually a 5k or 10k) for us to run ending up back at that brewery for a cold one and some laughs.

I thought I would share a list of local breweries that we have visited that are within walking distance or a quick cab/uber ride – or even a run! – from the downtown hotels and the convention center, the home of Content Marketing World. A special hat tip to my friend and fellow runner Pete Grasso for helping me compile the list!

Masthead Brewing Company
1261 Superior Avenue, Cleveland, OH

Masthead Brewing is such a unique spot to visit, located right in the heart of Cleveland. The owners renovated downtown’s old Bureau of Motor Vehicles into a large, open space brewery with great beer (I recommend the “Falling Fruit”) and a big ol’ hearth oven for flatbreads.

Noble Beast Brewing Company
1470 Lakeside, Cleveland, OH

Noble Beast (awesome name, huh?) is a great little brew pub that not only has some solid beer selections, they have a tasty menu as well. Pop in and take a look at the scenery, grab yourself a Catchweight Kölsch and a CLE Corndog. You won’t be disappointed.

Market Garden Brewery
1947 W 25th Street, Cleveland, OH

Located in Ohio City, just across the river west of downtown, you will find this great brewery that has a great list of brews, a great menu and a great enclosed patio. There’s a whole bunch of Cleveland pride in this brewery and it definitely is reflected in branding, their bar and definitely in their beer. Try a Lakeside Lager and take in the atmosphere!

Great Lakes Brewing Company
2516 Market Avenue, Cleveland, OH

Great Lakes is one of the cornerstones of the brewing scene in the Cleveland area. Their beer has a national reach and quite a following. As Clevelanders, we eagerly wait with anticipate for their seasonal brews, especially their famous (and delicious) Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Stop in to this iconic Cleveland brewery to try an Eliot Ness Amber Lager or a Dortmunder Gold and enjoy the history.

Nano Brew Cleveland
1859 W 25th Street, Cleveland, OH

This fun little brewery in Ohio City loves beer and bikes and they combined them both! Stop in grab a cold one and snack on some Stoner Fries in their awesome outdoor beer garden.

Saucy Brew Works
2885 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland, OH

This brewery is as creative and saucy as its name. A great lineup of drafts, including my favorite: Punchline Fruit Ale. Their pub is lively and colorful, and their nice patio is a perfect place to sit and nosh on one of their great pizzas!

Platform Beer Company
3506 Vega Avenue, Cleveland, OH

Platform is a bit west of downtown (you will need a cab or Uber), but it is definitely worth the 5-minute ride to check out all that this brewery has to offer in their wide selection of brews. My favorite is their “Summer Sublime,” but if you are more of an IPA kind of person, I highly recommend their “Speed Merchant.” Located in a great little neighborhood outside the city, Platform offers a great spot to hang out and unwind, especially out back in their picnic table area.

Also, if you are coming to Content Marketing World 2018, we would love to have you join our CMW Running Club! Join your fellow content marketers that have a passion for waking up early and doing a great 3-mile run or 1-mile walk around the city before the conference. More details to come on dates and meeting times, but feel free to ask me any questions! Find me on Twitter @jkkalinowski. Come and hit the pavement around the city and enjoy some of the tasty brews that Cleveland has to offer. Cheers!

  1. MarkTennant says:

JK, you have to come to Uptown and run in University Circle. On the campus of Case Western, there is a brewery, only one on a college campus east of the Mississippi I believe….The Jolly Scholar! Good brew, good foot, great people!

    • Joseph Kalinowski says:

That certainly sounds like a plan, Mark! I don;t think it would be hard to convince my crew to venture east for a “field trip.”

  2. MarkTennant says:

    Food, not ‘foot’..
Although the running metaphor is appropriate.
