Meet the CMI & #CMWorld Team: Joseph “JK” Kalinowski

Welcome to week 2 of our “Meet the CMI Team” series on the Content Marketing World blog! Each week we’ll showcase a different CMI team member so you can get a chance to know us before Content Marketing World this September. This week we welcome the sage wisdom, silliness and dedication of Joseph Kalinowski, also known simply as JK.

Explain your role at CMI. What kinds of things do you do on a day-to-day basis?

My main job at CMI is to work with the marketing, content creation and sales teams to bring their projects to life from the visual strategy side. Each day is a bit different including tasks such as designing custom blog visuals, ebooks and content marketing research reports to more involved projects such as visually developing the theme to Content Marketing World.

What makes you the most excited about work each day?

The variation in projects on a daily basis has kept this job so exciting to me for so long. I love working with the teams through the ideation process of each project and seeing them come to life!

What is your background, and how did it lead you into content marketing?

I worked as a senior designer in advertising and then the B2B publishing industry for many years until I met Joe Pulizzi at a neighborhood event nearly 10 years ago. We chatted content and design and from there I started freelancing for the company what would eventually become CMI, then known as Junta42. I was hired on as the company’s full time designer about a year after, eventually becoming CMI’s Creative Director.

What kind of people do you want to connect with more – whether at Content Marketing World or at UBM?

Each year at CMWorld, I love bumping into and chatting with attendees that have an interest in visual strategy and design. I like to pop into the tracks based on visual strategy and chat with attendees after the session to get their opinions, ideas, talk about their work and swap ideas. I have made some great friendships and learned a lot by doing this!

If you had a personal mission statement, what would it be?

To live life to its fullest by taking risks and facing challenges head on. Pay attention to the smallest details and ALWAYS have a pen and piece of paper in your pocket for those moments of inspiration.

Besides content marketing, what other niche could you write about?

Visual strategy, design and visual inspiration, crazy dog stories and Star Wars!

What’s the last good book you’ve read?

I am a fan of the horror genre, so I would have to say Horns or Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill. I am also love the book (and refer to if often) Pretty Much Everything by graphic designer Aaron James Draplin.

What’s something you’ll always find in your refrigerator or pantry?

An abundance of iced tea in the fridge and microwave popcorn in the pantry. Plus Milkbones for our Irish Terrier, Chief Brody.

What’s something else you’d like our community to know about you?

I’m pretty much an open book, but those who know me know that I am enchanted by the artwork of art nouveau painter and designer Alphonse Mucha. So much so that I have six tattoos featuring his artwork on my legs and arms.

Thanks, JK! All of us that know you know that one of your best qualities is that when you like something you’re all in! (Not a Cavs reference, but fitting!) We’re grateful for your passion for quality and eye for beauty! You make our jobs easier and can take our visions and create something better than we ever expected.

If you don’t know JK, we highly recommend getting to know him. You’ll catch him fashionably decked out in orange during the big event.
